About us

Family owned award winning wine farm
Family owned award winning wine farm

The driving force behind the business is William Trew, known to everyone as Bill.
Bill left his mining town  in Wales to make a new life in South Africa as a young mining engineer. With an empty suitcase but a heart full of dreams he went on to build a conglomeration of businesses that still exist today and all based in Africa: from gold mining, to engineering design , gold laboratory testing to, brewing and now  farming & wine making.
This is a story of success from humble and seemingly hopeless beginnings, through hard work and perseverance.
One of our most renowned wines is Amesteca, a Romanian word for conglomeration. It's a reflection of how we can come together to achieve more than we ever dreamt of.

Our farm has travelled along a similar path.
From a micro brewery on a large piece of land we had the vision and without any encouragement or support we planted the first vines, built a winery, developed a brand and started to produce internationally recognised award winning wines.
We are proud of the journey and excited to see how much more we can achieve in the years to come.

THEO

One of the country's most respected viticulturists and cellar master. He loves the fact that Walker Bay Estate is a small Estate, that allows him to input into the terroir and each individual wine produced.

DEVONTE

No one loves their job more than Devonte our tractor driver. He is thrilled with his new state of the art Kubota tractor and can be seen daily driving it around the farm.

STEPHEN

All our kitchen staff are enthusiastic about the meals they prepare. Non more so than Stephen who not only produces our flatbreads but looks after the kitchen garden. Ensuring we have farm grown fresh produce, every single day.

Our Name

Walker Bay is located in the  Western Cape province of South Africa. It is the next major bay between False Bay near Cape Town and Cape Agulhas to the south-east. The bay is famous for having some of the best land based whale-watching in the world, thus the inspiration for the whale tail logo.

Birkenhead, or HMS Birkenhead as it refers. Established in 1998, the Birkenhead Brewery was the first craft breweries in South Africa. The name is inspired by the famous sinking of the HMS Birkenhead just s few km down the coastline.
